What is Respiratory Physiotherapy?

Respiratory physiotherapy is an area of the profession that focuses on the management and treatment of people with lung conditions. The goal of respiratory physiotherapy is to provide:

  • Education on breathing and lung conditions

  • Utilise and teach techniques to support airway clearance

  • Provide exercises for the management and improvement of lung function

  • Support your goals and improve overall function and quality of life

Common lung conditions we can treat include; asthma, pneumonia, bronchiectasis, bronchitis, COPD & Cystic Fibrosis

What to expect at your initial assessment:

During your appointment, you'll complete a new patient form (if applicable) and a questionnaire about your breathing and its impact on your quality of life. We'll discuss your general health, activity levels, symptoms, and current treatments, including any medications. Your breathing, cough, and lung function will be assessed through physical examination, including listening to your lungs with a stethoscope and feeling your ribs. You'll also receive guidance on device techniques, such as using inhalers, spacers, and airway clearance devices. If necessary, we may assess your fitness with a short walking test. A personalised plan for future management, treatment, and progress monitoring will be developed based on your goals.
